About Marvin
Jazz pianist Marvin Thompson Jr. is a musician, producer, recording artist and music educator from Detroit MI. Self-taught at the age of 9, he started playing on his mother’s chord organ, piecing together melodies of songs he heard on the radio and record player. Marvin took inspiration from the sights and sounds that surrounded him growing up on Detroit’s west side. He has several contemporary jazz recordings released on his December Sky label, and he was featured on the television program Detroit Performs. As a music educator, Marvin teaches music to students of all ages, from elementary school to the collegiate level. He performs at concerts and festivals, as well as intimate music venues as a solo pianist and with his band, MJT Collective. Marvin is the recipient of the John Lennon Songwriting Award and the Billboard Songwriting Award. Marvin's studio recordings are available on Apple Music, Spotify, and all streaming platforms.
